BREWERY
Reviving a Rich Brewing Heritage
Westerham Brewery Company is proud to bring brewing back to the historic town of Westerham. With its long and proud brewing heritage, the town can once again celebrate locally brewed, top-quality craft beers.
The brewery has revived many of the much-loved flavours from the historic Black Eagle Brewery, which closed in 1965 during the major consolidation of the “Big Brewers” in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, we continue that tradition, combining heritage with modern craft brewing.
WATER
Great beer starts with great water. Our local water filters naturally through the Lower Greensand Ridge north of Westerham, creating ideal conditions for brewing the pale bitter beers that the town was once famous for. The Vale of Holmesdale has supported several breweries over the years thanks to its exceptional water, including two historic breweries in Westerham — the Swan and the Black Eagle. To maintain this tradition, we drilled our own 90-metre borehole into the Hythe beds of the Lower Greensand aquifer.
MALT
We use only the finest English winter malting barley. Our base malts come from Crisp Malting in Fakenham, Norfolk, while our speciality coloured malts are produced by Simpsons Malt. Some of our beers contain up to seven different malts, allowing us to create a wide range of beer styles, flavours, and colours.
HOPS
We are passionate about hops — especially Kent hops. Being a small brewery in Kent means celebrating the exceptional ingredients grown right on our doorstep. We work closely with local hop growers, including Ian Strang, who farms the Scotney Castle Estate in Lamberhurst and the Finchcocks hop gardens in Goudhurst. Around 80% of the hops we use are grown in Kent, and our “Spirit of Kent” beer features nine different Kent hop varieties. Our hop suppliers include Lupofresh, English Hops (C&R Edmed), Charles Faram, Steiner Hops, and Yakima Chief.
YEAST
One of the most special parts of our brewing story is our yeast. We have re-cultured the original yeast from the historic Black Eagle Brewery. When the brewery was taken over in the mid-20th century, the head brewer wisely preserved samples of their yeast at the National Collection of Yeast Cultures, ensuring it would not be lost forever. Over 50 years later, these unique yeast strains have been revived, and Westerham Brewery now holds the sole rights to use them.
With water from the same aquifer, the same historic yeast strains, and inspiration from the original recipes, we aim to capture the true essence of the ales that once made Westerham famous.
Story
Titsey Brewing Co began in a small farm shed at Botley Hill Farmhouse, where brewing first started on a modest scale with a passion for creating high-quality, characterful beers. From these humble beginnings, the brewery quickly gained a strong local following.
Initially served in a couple of picturesque country inns in Surrey, including the Botley Hill Farmhouse, Titsey Brewing Co’s beers soon found their way into pubs, farm shops and specialist beer retailers across Surrey and Kent.
As demand grew, the brewery successfully launched a crowdfunding campaign in 2018, allowing it to expand production and move into a unique location known as the “Brewery in a Bunker.” The bunker, originally built during the Cold War as a potential nuclear shelter (but fortunately never had to serve that purpose) became an unusual but memorable home for the brewery during its next stage of growth.
In 2021, Titsey Estate Company acquired a majority stake in the brewery to support further development and investment. This partnership enabled the brewery to expand again into a purpose-built facility at Clarke's Lane Farm in Tatsfield. With increased brewing capacity, modern equipment and an on-site taproom, Titsey Brewing Co has continued to grow into a well-established regional brewery.
The Surrey Hills
The brewery enjoys spectacular views across the Surrey Hills from its taproom and surrounding countryside. As more beer lovers discover the brewery and visit from across the South of England, the team continues to develop new beers while building on its popular core range.
Titsey Brewing Co’s first beers – Gower Wolf, Leveson Buck and Gresham Hopper – quickly became favorites among drinkers and have since been joined by the crisp and refreshing Innes Lager.
With alcohol levels below 4% ABV across the core range, these beers are designed as approachable session ales that still deliver plenty of character and flavor.
Inspired by the outdoor lifestyle of the Surrey Hills, Titsey Brewing Co embraces a spirit of adventure. It’s no surprise that the beer are just as popular with walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers exploring the countryside as they are with pub-goers and beer festival enthusiasts looking for great local craft beer
